Usha Dhami: Please tell me something about rudraksh.
Swami Ram Swarup: The act of wearing rudraksh, has not been mentioned in Vedas, please. Vedas tell only worship of formless God. However, a person can wear rudraksh at his own accord. I also paste here my article on wearing gems:

WEARING GEMS
Yajurveda mantra 7/48 and similar types of several mantras of Vedas state that we, the human beings are free to do pious deeds or sins. But result thereof is always awarded by Almighty God in the shape of happiness and sorrows respectively. Everybody knows that Almighty God is supreme judge, so how can a man, woman or a gem change the result of the deeds of a person. For example- God has given punishment to a person due to his sins of previous lives and person has to face sorrows, accident etc., then how can an astrologer or gem change the award of Almighty God. Actually, due to lack of the knowledge of Vedas, fundamental law of nature/God has now become unknown to the innocent public, with the result, several man made worships/rules etc., have been forced on the innocent public and in this way, the public is being divested of money and happiness.

Our country has been a land of rishis and munis who have never deceived the people. Instead, they serve the people whole heartedly and maintain peace. Yes, somebody can claim that he has been benefited by wearing gem, present astrology and by following the path of false saints etc. But, it is not a reality, say Vedas. Actually, what happens is that the benefit achieved by such people is due to the result given by God to them based on their pious deeds of previous lives. Vedas –shastras further tell that even in the absence of adoption of the said false path, the benefit would have inevitably accrued to the person. Otherwise several people adopt the false path, which is against the Vedas, but only few get the said benefit. If the path had been true according to Vedas then everyone could receive the benefit. Our pious human body has been blessed by the God to achieve the true path stated in Vedas by which final liberation is attained.

Future is based on present pious deeds. If anyone wants to make his future bright, he is required to do hardworking, pious deeds to maintain honesty, firm decision and daily worship of God. Yajurveda mantra 7/48 states that human beings are free to do pious deeds or sins but result is awarded by God in the shape of pleasure, long, happy life and sorrows respectively. So why to worry about the future. In fact we should be concerned about our present pious deeds which will make our future bright. It is a fundamental law of Vedas that present pious deeds alongwith eternal worship of God based on Vedas destroys the result of previous lives’ sins which have to be borne in our future or present life.

So instead of wasting our energy in baseless thoughts or worries about future, we should channelize our energy in doing pious deeds in our present time.

Sooryanarain: What is the name of Janaka Maharishi’s wife, mother of Urmila?
Swami Ram Swarup: Name of Sita’s mother is Yogini, wife of King Janak. She took birth from her parents as usual. The other stories should not be believed being unnatural, unscientific and being against the Vedas, please. That is why, Atharvaveda mantra 7/105/1 warns the people not to follow the path of books written by men, in the matter of faith. The mantra further states to follow only divine preach of the Vedas and the Rishis munis, yogis who followed/ still follow the path of Vedas, did Ashtang Yoga practice and as a result, they attained/attain salvation.

M V: Good time of marriage of my daughter.
Swami Ram Swarup: Days, time etc., are made by God. So, are pious as is God. Any suitable date can be fixed for marriage or for any other functions. I also paste my article on the matter –
Shubh Din
All the days, week, month, years, minutes, seconds have been created by God and thus are always pious. Regarding the philosophy of deeds, Vedas tell that we have come here to face the previous lives’ deeds (good or bad) according to Rigveda mantra 10/135/1,2 and we have to face the said deeds in the shape of pleasure and pain respectively. So, the days are not concerned with auspiciousness or bad omens. If we do pious deeds today then one day we will enjoy pleasure and if we do bad deeds then in the future on any day we will have to face sorrows awarded by God. So, the day becomes full of pleasure or full of sorrows when we face our deeds as said above. So days are never good or bad but always pious and gifted. So days are never good or bad, but always pious and gifted to us by God to always do pious deeds to enjoy life.

Also the days, nights and times are never ashubh (unfortunate) being created by the purest God. only deeds done by us are bad or good. And based on the previous lives’ deeds we have to face the result thereof accordingly on one particular day and time. So days are not good or bad. It is our own deeds done by us which are bad or good.

So one can enter at one’s own convenience or suitability in his newly constructed house, shop etc., or start any pious work at any time. However, one should perform havan with Ved mantras before ensuing any of those works. It does not depends on any name and date of birth etc. because it is not mentioned in Vedas. We must be always away from blind faith.

Sweta Baboolall: What are the qualities of nachiketas as a good students in katha upanishads?
Swami Ram Swarup: The good qualities of Nachiketa’s are as follows-
He was the most obedient student as he obeyed his father and left home for Yamraj (acharya). He was the supreme aspirant (Jigyasu) to gain the knowledge of Almighty God. As he did not accept the best worldly materialistic article which were offered by Yamraj in place of Brahm Gyan. He was a Brahamchari, which qualities are not being seen nowadays.

Prashk: What is the meaning of our God Ganesh Aarti?
Swami Ram Swarup: God creates universe. Therefore, He gives the knowledge of four Vedas to the human being in which the philosophy of deeds, science and worship has been preached. In Vedas, there is no mention about idol worship, please. So I am sorry to fulfill your requirement please. You are advised to make contact with a local pandit of a temple for the same.

D N: Student feeling disheartened about future prospects of jobs. Not giving competitive exams
Swami Ram Swarup: I am sorry to say that these are not good signs of a student if his mind does not concentrate in his studies. In shastras, it is stated that a student does not require any comfort etc., except hard study and care of health. It is also sad that you have not faced any competitive exam. Does not matter past is past. Let the past be gone. Now, shastras state, always think about present. Now, please recollect and concentrate your mind in studies and improving health. Otherwise, nobody will worry about you in future and you will be of no use for the world. Please, awake, be brave and continue your studies with new zeal and enthusiasm. My blessings are with you my daughter. I also paste my articles in this regard.

Shubh Karma
Hard working, devotion, dedication, honesty, services to the parents and elders to follow eternal religion mentioned in Vedas, practice of Ashtang Yoga, discharging moral duties to get progress in education, science simultaneously with spiritualism like, daily havan, to be in contact with the learned Acharya, to get his advice, are some of the pious deeds which make the future bright and obliterate the sorrows, problems, diseases, etc.

One must wake up early in the morning for early morning walk and exercises, must sit on meditation and chant holy name of God, must be away from any addiction and non-vegetarian. Such pious actions lead to long, happy life and bright future.

STUDENT LOSING CONCENTRATION
Concentration is not made on mind, but mind has to be concentrated on particular point or subject etc. It requires practice of Yam, Niyam, Asan, Pranayaam, Pratyahar, Dharnna and Dhyan then one attains Samadhi. In this path, guidance of a spiritual master who knows Vedas and Ashtang Yoga philosophy is needed. Holy name jaap of God helps a lot. I have written a book on Yoga which can be sent on receipt of your postal address. However, personal guidance as stated is essential. It is a moral duty of a student to concentrate on hard study and to look after his health. Avoid bad society always concentrate on your Brahamcharya. Awake early in the morning and after bath-brush etc., do holy name jaap of God at least for fifteen minutes. Go for morning walk and light exercises daily. Take plenty of water i.e., 15-20 glass in a day. Always respect your parents, elders and teachers. Must be soft spoken, Avoid TV to see bad scenes, films etc. This all will help you
to concentrate in your study. Whatever, you study and learn, try to write on rough book a lot without seeing books etc. Please refer to the book- “Brahamcharya-Dukh Nivarak Divya Mani”.
